Namaka, the Spirit of Water, Hawaiian Goddess of the Sea

Namaka and Pele, Sisters of Water and Fire

Namaka, the Goddess of the Sea rules over the cool, majestic waves of the ocean. Her spirit lives within the water and the sacred creatures of the sea.

Namaka’s sister Pele, the Volcano Goddess gives birth to new rock formations and land with her hot lava and flaming spirit. Namaka cools the lava with her healing waters allowing it to become newly birthed lands.

According to ancient legend, Namaka was married to the mighty sorcerer, Aukelenuiaiku. She was so impressed by his warrior spirit that she taught him her magical powers.
But Aukelenuiaiku was seduced by beautiful sister Pele. He betrayed Namaka by taking Pele as his wife.
Overcome by rage, Namaka sent high tides and floods to destroy Pele’s home. Pele and her family fled, but could not escape her sister’s wrath. Everywhere that Pele opened a crater for her volcanic fire to rest, the smoke would signal Namaka of her whereabouts.
Namaka’s jealousy towards Pele has been said to cause riptides, swells and tsunamis.
Namaka followed Pele throughout the Hawaiian Island chain, until Pele finally settled in the high mountains of Mauna Loa, which were too high for the ocean’s waves to reach. Pele became more confident and started battles with Namaka.

To this day, Pele’s lava flows thick and hot untill it reaches the cooling waters of the sea — symbolizing the match in strength between the sisters of fire and water.

Pele is mesmerizing with her fiery display of explosive lava and energy, Namaka sends the ocean’s swells to the Hawaiian Islands’ shores. Summer in Hawaii brings waves for the south shore, while winter months guides the surf to the islands’ north

Waves break by her force. Surf generates at her call.

Namaka is often portrayed as the fierce goddess of the sea and feared for her power to create strong tides that destroy land. But she is also to be treated with respect.

Look for the face of Namaka in the ripples of waves lapping against the shore
or in the foamy surf of the sea!
Every wave you see, every sacred creature of the ocean reflects the spirit of Namaka.

Let the healing Mana of Namaka’s waves wash over you!

Where I live, there are Rainbows

Maile, the Lei of Eternal Love

In Hawaii Maile leis represent the umbilical cord to the spiritual world.

Offering a Maile lei has been and still is of great cultural significance to the Hawaiian people. Weaved into the lei is the Mana (spiritual energy) and spirit of Aloha of the artist. Draping a Maile lei around a person is a significant gesture of love, honor, and respect.
Maile leis are rare and considered the most precious of all leis. The native Hawaiian vine, with shiny fragrant leaves and bark grows in the upland forest. The long lasting lei is made of the stems and leaves in an open ended horse shoe fashion reaching from around the neck to the legs.

“Eia la he 'ala, he' ala anuanu, he ala hu'ihu'i, eia la i ka houpo
Here is a fragrance, a cool fragrance, a chilling fragrance that goes to my heart.”

In old Hawaii Maile was used for peace treaties. Rival chiefs would meet in a heiau (temple) to weave a Maile lei. After completing the lei peace was declared.
Maile is also considered sacred to Laka, the Hawaiian Goddess of Hula. To honor Laka, Maile is offered at her altar during hula dances.
At weddings Maile leis are often used as a symbol of eternal love.

The various significant meanings and uses of the sacred Maile lei inspired the creation of Menehune Baby Maile.

Maile, the Menehune Baby
Birth Date: Nowemapa 3, 2022 (11/03/22)

Maile’s Mana (spiritual energy) helps us to reconnect with our spiritual origin, the eternal presence of love within and all around us.
Maile is named after the traditional Maile Lei which in Hawaii represents the umbilical cord to the spiritual world. Maile is the lei of eternal love.
Maile just left the spiritual world and her memory and connection to her origin are very strong. The deep inner knowing that she is always taken care of fills her with trust and love.
The Menehunes are chanting softly to Maile:

“Eia la he 'ala, he' ala anuanu, he ala hu'ihu'i, eia la i ka houpo
Here is a fragrance, a beautiful fragrance that goes to my heart.”

Maile is an 8 months old Pepe (baby) and the Menehune’s Keiki Punahele (beloved child). Surrounded by her Ohana’s (family’s) Aloha, Maile lies contently in her coconut cradle sucking on her thumb.
The Menehunes rejoice in her sweet innocence. They love her and always watch over her, nurturing her with warm baby milk whenever she is hungry.
Sometimes at night, even Volcano Goddess Pele comes to watch over the precious baby for a while.

Maile invites you to enter her sacred space so that your beauty can unfold
like the precious leaves of the Maile lei.

Maile’s Tutu (grandmother) wove her Mana and Aloha into the Maile and Puakenikeni flower lei which surround the top of the cradle.
Tutu crocheted white panties for Maile and matching booties which she adorned with 2 tiny green crystals. Last Tutu stuck a green bow with a crystal into Maile’s hair.
All these things were Tutu’s gifts of Aloha for her beloved Mo’opuna (granddaughter).

Maile is about 3.5” tall fitting in the palm of your hand. The body is made out of doll skin and wired for flexibility. The eyes and mouth are intricately embroidered onto the face.
Maile has tiny little hands and feet, elf ears, buttocks, and a belly button.

The coconut for Maile’s cradle was selected from palm trees at Punalu’u Black Sands Beach. It is hand carved, sanded, polished, and fit to a custom coconut base. All accessories were individually handcrafted.
Maile is not a dress up doll. All clothing and accessories are sewn and/or glued onto her.

Doll care: Gently brush the dolls and their clothing with a soft toothbrush to remove dust. Always brush the faces and bodies upwards towards the hair. Do not brush the hair!

Maile is a one of a kind display doll handcrafted by Hawaiian Dolls. She comes with her story, her cradle and a certificate of authenticity. Maile is a collector’s items bringing you the spiritual power of Hawaii.

Maori, Celebrating Culture

Māori, Celebrating Culture

For over 1000 years, Māori have been the Tangata Whenua, the indigenous people of New Zealand.
15% of New Zealand’s population are Maori.
Māori are warriors and a very strongly connected to their spirituality. In spite of having been strongly influenced in the past, the Maori people have kept their culture alive, still speaking the traditional language and performing ancient ceremonies.

Some core concepts of Māori culture are Mana, Tapu and Utu.

Mana is the Māori concept that represents power and prestige. Mana is enhanced through the Maori’s actions and responses to events of life.

Tapu means untouchable. The Polynesian concept of Tapu is the strongest force in Māori life. Tapu rules and prohibitions are sacred spiritual restrictions. A person, object or place that is Tapu may not be touched or, in some cases, not even approached.

Utu is often defined as revenge, but it actually refers to the balance and harmony within society. Utu often was a gift exchange to establish and maintain social bonds and obligations. Up to this day, Utu means that everything has to be put right.

Kapa Haka

Kapa haka, traditional Māori performing arts are a powerful part of the New Zealand culture. Kapa means to form a line. Haka means to dance. Kapa Haka is an emotional and powerful combination of song, dance and chanting. The graceful action songs and ferocious war dances including the demonstration of traditional weapons are a magnificent spectacle.

                                                                 Waiata-ā-ringa

Waiata-ā-ringa are the action songs and dances, where the lyrics are enhanced by hand movements. In a movement called Wiri, the dancers flutter their hands quickly to symbolize shimmering waters, heat waves or a breeze moving the leaves of a tree. Accompanied by a guitar, these dances can be slow, fast, serious, fun or flirtatious.

                                                                        PoiPoi
PoiPoi is a dance in where each performer skillfully twirls one or more poi (ball on a chord) in perfect harmony with the others. Striking the ball on the hand or body adds a percussive rhythm. Poi dancers are usually women dancing with grace, beauty and charm.

The group dance Haka is the ceremonial Māori war dance. Haka represents pride, strength and unity.
Stomping of the feet, protrusion of the tongue and rhythmic body slapping accompany a loud chant incorporating traditional weapons like the Taiaha (spear-like weapons) and Patu (clubs). The lyrics often describe ancestors and events in the tribe's history.

Pūkana (facial expressions) emphasizes the dance and the dancer’s ferocity and passion.
The women open their eyes wide while jutting out their chin. The men stretch out their tongue and bar their teeth. All these expressions show strong and deep-felt emotions.

                                                                       Ta mojo
Māori facial and body tattooing is known as Tā moko.
Tā moko reflects an individual's whakapapa (ancestry) and personal history. Facial tattoos have great significance. With the head being the most sacred part of the body, men received Mataora on their face as a symbol of nobility.

Moko kauae are the tattoos for women which are placed on their lips and chin. A moko kauae represents a woman’s leadership within her community as well as her status, and abilities.
The moko kauae is a physical manifestation of a woman’s true identity. It is believed every Māori woman wears a moko on the inside, close to their heart; when they are ready, the tattoo artist simply brings it out to the surface. The moko is a rite of passage between girl and adulthood.

                                                               Maori Necklaces

Made out of bone, wood or jade, Maori pendants have great spiritual and cultural significance to honor ancestors and mythological beings.

One of them is the Koru which is the unfurling fern frond of New Zealand's silver fern. Most Koru pendants are carved from bone. The spiral shape symbolizes new life, growth, a fresh start and new beginnings. It represents the Mana, spiritual power, positive change and awakening of a person.
Koru's spiral form simulates perpetual movement. The inner curl resembles going back to the origin. It resembles the concept of ever-changing life and also staying the same.

necklaces are often given as a gift for a special occasions like marriages or pregnancies. Koru symbolizes the strength of the bond between people.

The main characteristics of the Maori people are: Dependability, bravery, sensitivity, open-mindedness and humility. The Maori’s values and beliefs are focused on land, water and air which are essential to life and have to be respected, honored and sustained.

The cultural strength and beauty of the Maori people inspired the creation of Hawaiian Art Doll Ana, the Maori Dancer.
                                                Ana (Gracious), the Maori Dancer
                                                     Birth Date: August 21, 2022

Ana’s dance reveals the power of positive change and awakening.

Graciously Ana dances and chants the PoiPoi (Maori dance). She flutters her hands to symbolize the shimmering waters and the breeze moving the leaves in the trees. With grace, beauty and charm, she twirls her 2 PoiPois (balls) in perfect harmony with each other.

Ana has the greatest respect for all of life and always honors it in her dance.

Ana’s moko kauae (chin tattoo) symbolizes her rite of passage between girl and adulthood. Like all Maori women, Ana wears a moko on the inside, close to her heart. When she was ready, the tattoo artist simply brought it out to the surface of her chin.

In honor of her rite of passage, Ana’s grandmother gave her a Koru (spiral) necklace. It symbolizes a fresh start with new beginnings. The necklace represents Ana’s Mana, her spiritual power and awakening.
Grandmother also made Ana’s piupiu (flax skirt) and tāniko bodice with a matching headband. She sewed a red skirt and matching panties to wear under the piupiu.

Ana is a 7” tall cloth doll. The body is made out of doll skin, stuffed with high quality poly fill and wired for flexibility. The eyes and mouth are intricately embroidered onto the face giving the doll a unique personality. All accessories were individually hand crafted.
Ana is not dress up dolls. All clothing and accessories are sewn and/or glued onto her.

Full moon of the night
Reveal your
Beauty

Because of her devotion to the moon’s Mana (spiritual energy), Hina was named after the Hawaiian Goddess of the Moon.
Hina blesses her Menehune Ohana (family) with new growth, intuition and creativity by generously sprinkling the seeds of heaven from her cosmic Ipu upon them.
The Menehunes watch in awe as the heavenly seeds attune them to spirit and gladden their heart.
At night, Hina dwells under the night sky. Feeling like a sparkling diamond shining among the stars, she gets lost in the majestic beauty of the moon.
Hina cradles her celestial Ipu, releasing the stars which are the seeds of the heavens.

Join Hina in planting the seeds of heaven to grow dreams and
communicate visions to the Mana of the Universe.

Reap what you sow and celebrate your crop!

Hina's Tutu (grandmother) wove her Mana and Aloha into her sweet smelling Puakenikeni flower and Maile Haku (head lei) and wrist leis. Maile is the lei of eternal love. It is believed to link to the divine.
Tutu also sewed Hina’s blue moon dress and matching panties.
Hawaiian gourds grow on a vine. Tutu picked the most beautiful of the Ipus for Hina. After she cleaned and polished it, it became Hina’s celestial Ipu.
All these precious things were Tutu's gifts of Aloha for her beloved Mo’opuna Wahine (granddaughter).
