Sailing their canoe in the gentle breeze of Punalu’u Black Sands Beach, brother and sister Ahe and Akela follow the entrancing sound of Kohola’s (whale’s) song, honoring the Akuas (spirits) of the ocean as they glide through the water.

Ahe’s Pu (Conch Shell) is a gift from the Pacific Ocean. When he blows it, a pure sound echoes across the ocean invoking blessings of divine Mana (spiritual energy). 

The graceful movements of Akela’s Hula accompanied by the rhythm of her Pu’ili sticks attune to spirit and gladden the heart.

The guidance and wisdom of Kohola, the majestic humpback whale protects Ahe and Akela. Kohola is their Aumakua (Guardian Spirit).

 Ahe’s and Akela’s Tutu (grandmother) sewed Akela's skirt and Ahe’s lava lava. She handcrafted Akela’s traditional hula skirt and coconut top. Tutu crocheted little blue shoes for them.

Tutu wove a green feather neck lei for Ahe and wrist leis for both of her grandchildren. The Hulu (feather) represents spiritual strength, unity and love. It is believed to link to the divine. Akela and the sail both wear a sweet smelling Puakenikeni flower Haku (head lei).

Ahe and his Kuku (grandfather) made the canoe together. Walking through the forest they started following the native forest bird who selected the tree they would use to build the canoe. After Ahe and his Kuku finished carving the canoe, they built the sail which has a design of a Humpback Whale.

Kohola on the sail gives Ahe and Akela the greatest comfort. It reminds them that, if they should ever get lost at sea, they can call on their Aumakua, the whale, who always, without fail, will come to guide them safely back to shore.

All these things were Tutu’s and Kuku's sacred gifts of Aloha (Love) to their beloved Mo’opunas (grandchildren).

 Ahe and Akela are about 4” tall fitting in the palm of your hand. The bodies are made out of stretch cotton and wired for flexibility. The eyes and mouth are intricately embroidered onto the face. Ahe and Akela have little hands and feet, ears, buttocks, and a belly button.

All accessories were individually handcrafted.

High up in the Kaiholena Mountains, Mana’o blows his Pu (conch shell) in the 4 sacred directions, announcing to his Menehune Ohana (family) that he is ready to tell another one of his exciting stories to them. As the powerful sound of Mana’o’s conch shell echoes across the 'Aina (land), the Menehunes come running to the story place in the ferns to hear Mana’o’s new tale.

 Mana’o tells stories about the Menehune Ohana, the Hawaiian animals, the forest, the ocean, and the stars in the Universe. The Menehunes listen to Mana’o’s story in wonder, sometimes laughing, sometimes crying, and always full of excitement.

Mana’o and his sister Pele worship the Akuas (spirits) of the sacred Ohia Forest.

The conch shell was Kuku’s (grandfather’s) gift of Aloha (love) to his Mo’opuna Kane (grandson). Mana’o always carries his conch shell, even when he goes to sleep. The Pu attracts good luck and the courage to manifest dreams.

Mana’o’s Tutu (grandmother) sewed his lava lava (wraparound) out of turquoise cotton with a Honu (turtle) design.

The Honu is Mana’o’s Aumakua (Guardian Spirit). The Honu’s wisdom embraces Mana’o and guides him on his quest

PELE, SHINING HER WAY INTO MY HEART

This beautiful big Pele doll was shining her way into my heart the entire time I was working on her.

I ended up falling hopelessly in love with her and kept her for myself. Now her enchanting smile follows me all day long, reminding me to always be happy, positive and grateful.

The pure sound of the Hawaiian Conch Shell echoes across the ‘Aina (land) invoking blessings of divine Mana (spiritual energy).

Blowing the Pu (conch shell) true and clear in the four directions, Kahu (Honored Guardian) announces the beginning of Aloha’s and Mana’o’s sacred Hawaiian wedding ceremony.

Kahu chants the ancient Hawaiian Wedding Oli:

Eia iha no ka maluhia o na lani me kakou a pau.

(May blessings from above rest upon you and remain with you now and forever.)

In tune with divine Mana (spiritual energy), Kahu humbly invites Akua (God) and the Aumakuas (ancestral guardian spirits) to join Aloha and Mana’o in their celebration of Aloha, to grant them to be united as one, in love forever and to bestow blessings upon the Menehune Ohana.

Suddenly ‘Io, the Hawaiian Hawk, soars majestically through the sky. ‘Io is considered a messenger of God. He is the physical manifestation of Aumakua and offers the blessings of his divine Mana to the couple.

Honu (turtle) came to join the celebration and offer her blessings. In Hawaii the Honu represents long life, safety, peace, and good luck.

Embracing under a Palm tree on a little wooden island, Aloha and Mana’o rejoice in their union. The island is the foundation of their relationship, representing integrity and strength.

Maile is the Hawaiian lei of eternal love and represents the umbilical cord to the spiritual world. As Aloha and Mana’o drape Maile Leis around each other, their spirits connect on a deep level. It is the traditional gesture of love, honor, and respect. The leis convey prosperity, health and blessings.

The sacred ritual unites the couple forever with the Mana (spiritual energy) of Aloha, the ‘Aina (land) and people of Hawaii.

After the ceremony, everybody joyfully gathers for the wedding celebration, enjoying their favorite foods, Mai’as (bananas), Kahikis (pineapples) and Taro, wonderful Hawaiian music and enchanting Hula dances. They laugh, eat and dance late into the night, rejoicing in the wonderful wedding Lu’au (party).

Aloha’s and Mana’o’s Tutus (grandmothers) wove their Mana (spiritual energy) and Aloha (love) into the leis they made for the couple.

Aloha’s and Mana’o’s Hakus (head leis), wrist and ankle leis represent Maile and the divine red Lehua blossoms from the sacred Hawaiian Ohia tree.

Aloha’s Tutu also made her white grass skirt, the veil and a red top, pants and shoes. Tutut adorned Aloha’s Haku with the sweet smelling Plumeria flowers.

Mana’o’s Tutu dressed her Mo’opuna Kane (grandson) in the colors of Hawaii: a yellow cape and red Malu (loincloth) with a drawing of the Hawaiian Honu (turtle). She lovingly draped leis around his head and ankles and a sacred amulet around his neck.

The graceful movements of their hands and bodies tell stories about the wonders of nature, the creation of the world and the traditions of the Hawaiian people.

Mochi is a beautiful girl, sweet and soft like the rice cake she is named after.
Mochi’s Tutu (grandmother) is her Kumu Hula (Hula Teacher). She taught her the powerful movements of the Kahiko Hula.
Tutu also sewed the traditional pink Pa’u hula skirt and matching top with a Plumeria flower design. Tutu wove her Mana (spiritual energy) and Aloha (love) into Mochi's green feather and Kukui nut Haku (head lei), wrist and ankle leis. In Hawaii the Hulu (feather) represents spiritual strength, unity and love. It is believed to link to the divine. Kukui nuts symbolize light and protection.

Hawaiian gourds grow on a vine. Tutu picked the most beautiful one for Mochi's Ipu. She cleaned and polished it. Tutu blessed the Ipu with Hawaiian salt and special prayers. The gourd is sacred now. It was created for Mochi and only she is allowed to touch it. The Ipu became Mochi’s most treasured possession.
All these precious things were Tutu’s gifts of Aloha (Love) to her beloved Mo’opuna Wahine (granddaughter).
