Menehune Mana

Pono (Harmony), the Menehune

Tutu Lulu, the Menehune Kupuna

Birthdate: Kepakemapa 19, 2024 (09/16/24)

Pono inspires Aloha and the lifestyle of Hawaiian Pono, which unites body,
mind and spirit in balance and harmony.

Full of mischief and excitement, Pono happily skips through the enchanting Ohia forest. Lots of treasures, like rocks, nuts and fruits, are everywhere. Pono picks up everything that looks special to him and carefully puts it in the pouch Tutu (grandma) crocheted for him.

Smiling happily, Tutu (grandma) Lulu (Peace) walks slowly and peacefully through the enchanting Ohia forest. She is looking for her favorite Lehua flowers, the beautiful magical blossoms of the indigenous Hawaiian Ohia Tree, which is the first form of life to grow directly out of the hardened black lava. Lehua means 'Flower of the Gods'.

Today she found a big orange Lehua flower and that is her gift to you!

Tutu Lulu channels peace and happiness.

Lulu is a Kupuna, one of the older people honored with Aloha as grandparents and ancestors by all. Kupunas are the source of experience, knowledge, guidance, strength and inspiration to the next generations. They are a blessing being the ones we came from, who have lived before us and who we live for today.

In Hawaii the Menehunes are often called "The Little People of the Secret Power" and referred to as the legendary, original inhabitants of the islands. Menehunes are mystical, shy little creatures who hide in secret places of the forest during the day, and perform their magic at night under the glow of the moon.
Many People in Hawaii have actually seen Menehunes.

Tutu Lulu and Pono take the greatest pleasure in doing good deeds to help people. With their great determination and perseverance, they possess a magical ability to get things done.

Pono loves playing, dancing, singing, swimming, and, most of all, eating. If you hanai (adopt) him, love him, and take care of him, he will love you in return with unconditional Aloha, guide, protect, and inspire you on your life's journey.

Tutu Lulu sewed his lavalava (wraparound) and Kihei (shawl) out of Tapa cloth. She also crocheted his Menehune hat and crafted his sacred Maile and Kukuit Nut lei. Kukui represents inner light, hope and renewal, spirit revealing itself. Maile is the lei of eternal love. All these things were Tutu’s gifts of Aloha to her beloved Mo’opuna Kane (grandson).

Tutu Lulu sewed her black dress with a big Hibiscus flower design. She crocheted a turquoise collar and matching shoes for herself. Last Lulu stuck a big turquoise bow into her white hair.

Pono and Lulu are about 7” tall and were individually handcrafted on the Big Island of Hawaii with the greatest love and respect for all that is Hawaii.

Their bodies are made out of doll skin and stuffed with high quality poly fill. The bodies are wired for flexibility. The eyes and mouth are intricately embroidered onto the face giving the dolls a unique personality. All accessories were individually hand crafted.

Kane, Hawaiian God of Creation

Kane
Hawaiian God of Creation

Kane is believed to have come through the gateway of the rising sun at Ha’eha’e, the easternmost point in the Hawaiian Islands.
In Hawaiian mythology Kane is the most revered of the four major gods (Kane, Ku, Kanaloa and Lono).
Kane is the god of procreation, creation and the sky. He is also worshipped as the ancestor of chiefs and commoners.

The Kumuhonua legend tells that Kane created earth, sea creatures, animals, plants, as well as man and woman. Kāne is the creator and the giver of life associated with dawn, sun and sky.

According to ancient Hawaiian mythology, it is believed that in the beginning, there was only Po; the endless black chaos. By an act of sheer will, Kane pulled himself free of Po. Lono and Ku followed him.
Kane created light to push back Po. Lono brought sound to the universe and Ku brought substance. Then they created all the lesser Gods and the Menehune to be their messengers and servants. Next the four Gods shaped the world. At last, they molded clay with their spittle into the shape of a man in the image of Kane and breathed life into the statue.”

Kane is strongly connected and often walks with Kanaloa, the God of the Ocean, thrusting his digging stick into rocks and releasing gushes of fresh water wherever he goes. On their journeys together Kane and Kanaloa would share the sacred drink of 'Awa (drink of the gods). Striking the ground with his staffs Kane caused hidden springs of fresh water to burst forth.

Kane’s regenerative waters have the power to create and renew.
They provide refreshment and rejuvenation, the light of understanding and
the ability to begin again.

Kane is the “inner source that guides us to well springs within our own psyches”.
All aspects of life are sacred to Kane in the flow of his creation.

Kane’s waters restore energy and harmony.

Poi, Sacred, Life-Giving Food of Hawaii

Taro

Taro was used to make Poi from the corm of the Taro plant, which was a sacred, life-giving, ancestral food for native Hawaiians. 80 different species of Kalo or Taro are known in Hawaii. All parts of the Taro plant were used; as food or for religious and medicinal purposes. The potato shaped Taro bulb was cooked and pounded to a paste with the Ku'i 'ai pohaku.

The Ku'i 'ai Pohaku, or poi pounder, is the most valuable Hawaiian stone tool. It is carved out of a gray lava. For many hours ancient Hawaiians shaped it patiently with a hammer stone and polished it with another stone until the shape of a cylindrical neck topped by a knob and with a flared bottom was completed.

Traditionally, the making of Poi was a ceremony of life that brought the Ohana (family) together. Ohana literally means 'all from the shoots'. The Kalo or Taro corm grows the Keikis (children) of the plant. Planting the Taro, making and eating Poi, all symbolize a deep family bond. Everybody in the Ohana worked in the Taro patch in the spirit of Hoolaulima (working together).

The Hawaiian saying 'take time to eat Poi' means 'slow down and enjoy life and health'.

Due to the many health benefits of Poi, ancient Hawaiians were one of the healthiest races on earth. Up to this day Poi is used for the prevention and cure of many health conditions.

Poi is a sacred food of great cultural significance.

The sacred Pohaku and life-giving Poi inspired the creation of Menehune Boy
Kalo, the Poi Maker.
Kalo (Taro), the Poi Maker

Birth Date: ‘Apelila 24, 2024 (04-24-24)

Kalo inspires us to enjoy life to the fullest.

In the spirit of Hoolaulima (working together), Kalo was working with his Ohana (family) in the Taro patch all day long. Everybody was laughing, singing, telling stories and enjoying each other's company. Now the Taro bulb is ready to be cooked and then pounded into sacred, life-giving Poi.

Poi is Kalo's favorite food. It is a lot of work to pound the cooked Taro into a paste with his Ku'i 'ai pohaku (Poi pounder). But it is worth every minute of it because Poi just tastes so good. Kalo is named after the Taro plant which produces this delicious dish.

Kalo’s life-giving Taro is a blessing.

Kalo and his Kuku (grandfather) carved the Ku'i 'ai pohaku out of stone. For many hours they shaped it patiently with a hammer stone and polished it with another stone until the shape of a cylindrical neck topped by a knob and with a flared bottom was completed. Afterwards they carved a wooden bowl to mash the Taro in.

Kalo's’s Tutu (grandmother) sewed his white Malu (wraparound) and matching hat. She drew and Taro leaves on the Malu and hat. Tutu also crocheted yellow underwear and little shoes.

All these things were Kuku's and Tutu’s sacred gifts of Aloha (Love) to their beloved Mo’opuna Kane (grandson).

Kalo is about 4” tall fitting in the palm of your hand. The body is made out of doll skin and wired for flexibility. The eyes and mouth are intricately embroidered onto the face. Kalo has little hands, feet, ears, buttocks, and a belly button. All accessories were individually handcrafted.
